Hepatitis A is acquired principally from contaminated food and water. Inadequate hygiene compliance by food handlers is a major source of infection, especially in countries with sub-optimal public health enforcement. Although the disease is not usually fatal, it can cause a prolonged, debilitating and unpleasant illness.
Persons of high socio-economic status are often susceptible. A safe and effective vaccine giving at least 20 years protection is available against hepatitis A.
