Pre-immunisation against rabies should be considered by travellers who are:
visiting areas where rabies is endemic
staying for considerable periods of time in a rabies endemic area
at particular risk e.g. backpackers or adventure travellers in endemic areas Any traveller who is bitten or licked by a potentially rabid animal must seek urgent medical attention! Children are at particular risk due to their lack of fear for animals.
Avoiding unknown animals and animals displaying abnormal behaviour is extremely important. Rabies is not curable, and leads to a painful death once contracted.
